Dr. Walter J. Lukiw had a long-standing professional interest in human brain and retinal gene expression and its regulation, as it pertains to memory, cognition, aging and to neurological disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), in small RNAs and messenger RNAs in the brain and retina, in IL-1β- TNFα- and Aβ42-related signaling functions in inflammation and inflammasome-mediated disease mechanisms, and in neurodegenerative diseases are associated with glial cell proliferation.
